Wisconsin’s 1st Black Supreme Court justice

Milwaukee County Judge Louis Butler Jr. addresses the media after Gov. Jim Doyle (1) appointed him to the Wisconsin Supreme Court in Madison, WI. Butler’s mother, Gwendolyn Johnson, looks on. Butler, 52, a Chicago native and former Municipal Court judge and public defender, is the first Black justice to serve on the state’s highest court. “It’s important when people come into the court that justice will be accomplished, that people feel the system is fair, and that when they look around, they see that everyone is represented in the courthouse,” he said.
