Mieasha Hicks named National Youth of the Year by Boys & Girls Club of America – Newsmakers – Brief Article

The Boys & Girls Club of America (BGCA) recently named Mieasha Hicks National Youth of the Year during a Congressional Breakfast held in Washington, D.C.

Hicks, 18, a member of the Boys & Girls Club of Toledo, OH, for 10 years, received a $10,000 college scholarship from the Reader’s Digest Foundation, sponsors of the event, which also awarded her $5,000 for earning the Midwest regional title.

The Youth of the Year program recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community and Club, as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome.

Born to teenage parents, Hicks was raised by her grandmother and aunts.

Since she joined the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, she has served as vice president of the Keystone Club, a group that gave her the opportunity to lead community service projects.

Hicks also assisted with the afterschool homework help program, Power Hour, serving as a positive role model to her seven siblings, all of whom have become honor students.

As an academic standout at Central Catholic High School in Toledo, Hicks was a member of the National Honor Society and was actively involved with the African-American Culture Club.

This fall she enters Bowling Green (OH) State University as a freshman and she will study medicine and science.
