National identification system – Worth Noting – Brief Article
Karen Ann Gajewski
* Concern over a national identification system has made for strange bedfellows. The American Civil Liberties Union has joined the Eagle Forum and numerous other groups in an unusual right-left coalition to oppose legislation that would standardize drivers’ licenses across the United States. The national ID system proposed by Virginia Representatives James Moran (Democrat) and Thomas Davis (Republican) would, according to the ACLU, “circumvent an important public and legislative debate and facilitate a surveillance society not in line with core American privacy rights and civil liberties.”
