Shedding light on interior design

NHS Estates recently published lighting and Colour for Hospital Design’, an NHS Estates-funded research and development project that was undertaken by the London South Bank University and the Building Research Establishment. The project examined “the visual environment and the positive effect this has on staff performance and recovery rates.” It looked at colour, surface textures and materials; daylighting, the importance of views/contact with the outside world, and artificial lighting. The report includes a review of published work, and reports on hospital visits, plus interviews with designers, facilities managers, medical staff and patients. We will be reviewing this document in the September issue. Visit the website www.tso.co.uk/bookshop to order copies.
