KABA INSTALLATIONS ENSURE RELIABLE, EASY ACCESS AT NHS TRUST
The Countess of Chester NHS Trust is keeping its entrances in good health with installations by leading door manufacturer and supplier – Kaba Door Systems.
Kaba was initially appointed to replace folding doors on the Accident and Emergency night entrance, which is used constantly by ambulance staff rushing patients into the hospital. The existing doors had become troublesome and draughty so Kaba specified and installed a new sliding door to provide fast, reliable access. A second sliding door was also installed, completing the hospital’s smart new appearance. Following the successful sliding door installations, Kaba returned to specify and install its new Air-Gate system to the hospital’s rear entrance and retrofit auto kits to doors in locations such as the mortuary.

YORKON IS FIRST MODULAR BUILDING MANUFACTURER TO ACHIEVE INDEPENDENT FIRE TEST APPROVAL
Portakabin subsidiary Yorkon is the first modular building manufacturer to achieve approval from the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB) for fire testing in line with the recommendations of the Association of British Insurers and Lloyds.
Assessed at the BRE Laboratories at Cardington near Bedford. Yorkon’s steel-framed modular building system for healthcare buildings has been subjected to stringent testing to LPS 1181 Part 3 for fire damage and spread of flame which involved full scale fire tests to assess reaction to fire.
Having been assessed for compliance with BS 476 Part22 in line with Building Regulations for fire resistance the new LPCB certification means that Yorkon’s modular system now has a grade A rating.

DIRECTIONAL SOUNDER MAKES LOCATING EMERGENCY EXITS “E-Z”
In an attempt to reduce the confusion often experienced by building evacuees, and thereby increase their chances of survival, Klaxon Signals has introduced a new directional sounder, the E-Z-Exit. Featuring broadband sound technology, the sounder allows building occupants to instantly locate their nearest exit during an emergency.
Traditional evacuation aids – such as emergency lighting, high-visibility LEDs and luminous guidance strips -are often little use in smoke-filled environments, where visibility can be less than two metres and where rapid evacuation is critical if inhalation of poisonous fumes is to be avoided. The E-Z-Exit emits pulses of broadband sound whose frequency increases as evacuees get nearer to the exit. A series of rising or falling tones is also used to indicate whether an evacuation route leads up or down.
Language-independent, the sounder is easily retrofitted and integrated with existing systems. Klaxon Signals Limited www.klaxonsignals.com
EUROTHERM CONTROL SOLUTION
A new ‘state-of-the-art’ Pharmacy Manufacturing Unit (PMU) at Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Trust, London, features sophisticated Water for Injection (WFI) and Clean Steam generation systems for cleaning and sterilisation purposes. The products of the system are used for a variety of manufacturing, cleaning and sterilizing purposes. WFI is used for prodcution, a number of equipment washing machines and cleaning in place (CIP) tasks, while Clean Steam is used for high temperature autoclaves and steam in place (SIP) purposes.
The complex system consists of three packaged plants, operating independently within an overall supervisory control architecture. In the first plant, raw water is purified by passing it through reverse osmosis filters and de-ionisation processes, clean steam generation and distillation for WFI, and distributed throughout the building to points of use.
The entire process is predominantly automated and thus reguires minimal operator intervention. Eurotherm Limited

COMPLETE COMMUNICATIONS SOLUTIONS
Increasingly, hospitals are opting for integrated communication systems rather than a mish-mash of systems from different manufacturers. For example, the new Community Hospital in West Berkshire has a digital nurse call system integrated with paging, staff security, and bedhead service containment systems, all supplied and installed by healthcare specialists the Wandsworth Group.
Integration means disruptive installation works are controlled and managed by one supplier, and only has to be done once. By using an experienced installation team that knows the systems well, hospitals can also benefit from quicker installation times, fewer delays and problems on site, particularly when integrating several different systems. Wandsworth have a strong track record of installing into live hospital environments, and are experienced in ensuring the smooth running of the process to minimise disruption to patients.

COUNCIL PREPARES FOR DDA WITH RONADECK FAST GRIP
Ronadeck Fast Grip was laid on the newly built entrance ramp and steps at County Hall, Lewes, for East Sussex County Council to ensure that the building complies with the incoming Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) regulations. The slip-resistant esinbonded surface was specified by NPS Property Consultants Ltd because of its naturally attractive apprearance and ease of application. David Betts from NPS Property Consultants Ltd comments, “We selected Ronadeck Fast Grip after considering several other slip-resistant surfaces. Fast Grip has the right qualities and is available in several colour options. It is hard-wearing and quick and easy to apply – which suited our needs exactly.” Stephen Etheridge from ESSE Landscapes is a Ronacrete trained contractor in the application of Ronadeck Fast Grip. “We were asked to carry out the work in a very short timeframe – when the County Hall was closed to the public,” said Stephen Etheridge. “One of the benefits of Fast Grip is that it can be applied to recently laid concrete – a necessity in this case as the ramp was built just 4 days before. We had one day to lay Ronadeck Fast Grip before the building opened to the public the following morning.”
