Soul Tending

Soul Tending

Milburn, Tim

What it is: This resource is written for senior highers and young adults who desire to delve deeper into the discovery and discipline of faith practices, either as individuals or in small groups.

The scoop: Gathering wisdom and insight from more than a dozen authors, this resource serves up an easy-to-read guide to spiritual practices that have shaped the Christian community over the centuries. After the heartfelt introduction (worth the price of the book), each chapter provides practical methods for integrating these disciplines into everyday living. The practices are organized into three categories: those that cultivate the inner life (fasting, meditation, and lectio divina), those that enrich others (almsgiving, spiritual direction, and faith-sharing), and those that form the community of Christ (such as the sacraments, covenanting, spiritual friendship). Regarding itself as a “primer in spirituality,” the book encourages readers to invest their lives in the journey toward becoming more like Christ. The only word of caution is one that the authors offer as well: The transforming process and power is found in God, not in the practices. They serve as a means and not an end in themselves.
