Religous t-shirt banned in school

Martin, Stephanie

LORAIN, OhioRichard Feliciano, a Hawthorne Elementary School student, was disciplined for wearing a T-shirt with a religious message. It said “Born to Raze Hell” and defined the word “raze.”

The shirt violated the school’s dress code, according to principal Loretta Jones, who made Feliciano wear it inside out. When he wore it to school the next day, she sent him home.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which often opposes religion’s intrusion into public life, sent Jones a letter in defense of Feliciano. ACLU spokesman Gary Daniels says, “This student has been reprimanded for doing nothing more than attempting to exercise his constitutional right to religious expression.”

Should Feliciano’s shirt have been banned from school? Why or why not? Was he wrong to wear it again after being disciplined? Why or why not?

Read Jeremiah 26:116; 1 Corinthians 9:1618; and 1 Timothy 4:1316. How do you define “evangelism”? What’s evangelism’s most important (or most effective) component: telling others about Jesus? living a Christlike lifestyle? other? Explain. What role, if any, can Christian products play in witnessing to non-Christians? Would Jesus have worn a shirt like Feliciano’s? Why or why not?

Read Acts 5:17-42;

Philippians 1:27-30;

Colossians 4:5-6; and

Titus 3:1-2. While sharing your faith, is it okay to disobey earthly authorities, or does that negate any positive witness for Christ? Explain. Should Christians submit to earthly discipline even when it seems unfair or oppressive? Why or why not? How would you have responded if you’d been told not to wear such a shirt? How would Jesus have responded?

Read Mark 13:9-13; 1 Peter 2:13-17; and 4:1216. Is what happened to Feliciano a form of religious persecution? Why or why not? Do you consider it an honor or a blessing to suffer for Christ? Explain. What limits, if any, should be placed on freedom of religious expression in public schools? in society? Have you ever been ashamed of wearing the name “Christian”? Explain.

What evangelism method is easiest for you? hardest?
