Sweet dreams: create a serene and happy baby’s room
IMAGINING YOUR BABY’S FIRST ROOM IS LIKE trying to visualize heaven on earth. Close your eyes and you might see a comfortable rocking chair; a crib with fresh, soft bedding for your sleeping babe; and stacks of tiny diapers conveniently placed above the changing table. A nursery is a little bit of heaven, but most of us need help with the specifics–exactly what kind of rocking chair, which style of crib and what pattern of bedding will all add up to that serene, comforting and happy space you’re envisioning?
Start with colors you love, ones that calm and soothe you. Next choose the crib; since this is usually the centerpiece of a nursery, it will define the look of the whole room. The nursery shown on these pages was designed with the beach in mind, using blues and greens, a natural wood crib, and accents such as a woven rug and bamboo window coverings. The look is modern, fresh, comfortable–and affordable; the rocking chair and chest of drawers, for instance, were purchased at stores specializing in unfinished furniture and painted a light green; the glass drawer pulls were bought at a local flea market.
Even if your due date is far away, start looking for items now–read catalogs, visit stores, search the Internet, wander through antique stores–so that when your baby arrives, the nursery will be a heavenly place for you and your child to get to know each other.
