All About Strollers

If you’ve never shopped for a stroller, get ready to be dazzle by all your options. But before you head out, keep a few basics in mind:

YOUR LIFESTYLE. Are you a walker, a jogger, a shopper? Do you ride the bus or subway? Do you live up a flight of stairs? Choose a stroller that best fits your lifestyle.

STORAGE SPACE. Apartment dwellers and compact car owners may want smaller, lightweight models that fold easily and take up little space.

THE WHEELS. Joggers and larger carriages usually have fixed, oversized wheels for stability; smaller strollers for indoor errands should have fully independent wheels that allow for greater maneuverability.

ALL THE EXTRAS. Consider one-hand fold, extra storage compartments, trays with bottle holders and canopies that flip back and forth. Look at all your options before you decide.

What is LATCH?

KEEP THEM SAFE. To improve car seat safety, a new attachment system called LATCH is now available, LATCH stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children. This new attachment system does not use seat belts to secure car seats. Starting in 2002, most new vehicles and car seats were equipped with lower anchors and tethers. Both the vehicle and the car seat need to have this new anchor system in place, otherwise seat belts are still required.

ON THE ROAD. Recent reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimate that 85 percent of car seats are improperly installed. While the new LATCH attachment system (see page 22 for information on LATCH) is designed to help, parents should know the facts before they strap in their little ones. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, infants should always ride in rear-facing car seats until they have reached both 20 lbs. and one year of age. And remember, never place a rear-facing car seat in front of an air bag.
