Baby babbling is anything but nonsense, experts have long suspected. Rather, it is an infant’s way of responding to parents’ speech patterns. Scientists at Dartmouth University observed that hearing babies born to deaf parents “babbled” with hand movements that were clearly distinct from random hand movements and that reflected the rhythmic patterns found in sign language.
