Coming soon: The U2 iPod?

Apple is set to unveil a special edition black iPod in collaboration with U2, according to a report on Forbes.com.

The report cites sources close to the group as claiming the special edition player will come preloaded with U2’s latest album, How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, as well as selections of music from its previous 10 studio albums.

The new iPod is expected to be officially announced next Tuesday 26 October, at a press conference attended by members of the band, as well as Apple chief executive officer Steve Jobs. The press conference will take place at the California Theatre in San Jose, Calif.

According to the Forbes report, the iPod will be just part of a wide-ranging agreement between Apple and U2, which will see the company’s iTunes Music Store have exclusive rights to the new album for several weeks after its release.

The U2 iPod will not be the first time that Apple has worked with artists on special edition music players. In December 2002, the company released a set of iPods baring the engraved signatures of Tony Hawk, Madonna, and others.

Details of the iPod’s specifications are at present unknown. However, it appears unlikely that the new machine mark the debut of the widely-expected color photo iPod, which is set for a debut in the coming months.
