In the third quarter of 1998, the goods deficit was $64.4 billion, about unchanged from the second quarter. The current account deficit rose to $61.3 billion in the third quarter, from $56.7 billion in the second quarter.

In the capital accounts, U.S. claims on foreigners reported by U.S. banks Increased $28.3 billion in the third quarter, following an increase of $24.6 billion in the second quarter. U.S. liabilities to private foreigners reported by U.S. banks, excluding Treasury securities, increased $82.7 billion in the third quarter, following an increase of $37.7 billion in the second quarter.
