See Not, Hear Not, Smell Not – methane emissions from abandoned mines significant – Brief Article
Octagon Energy and Alkane Energy, two specialists in extracting gas from abandoned mines, have submitted evidence that the UK government has ‘grossly underestimated’ the impact of methane emissions on the environment and affected communities. Their checks showed that at least 300,000 tonnes of methane were escaping from disused mines every year. The official government report on that subject says that net methane flow would be ‘negligible’ a few years after shut-down. According to Octagon, coal mine methane alone was contributing up to 10 per cent of the UK’S total greenhouse emissions.
