Science Myths – earth’s distance from sun – Brief Article

* MYTH: Earth is closer to the sun in summer than in winter.

* FACT: Actually, Earth reaches periphelion–the point closest to the sun–around January 3. Seasons are almost entirely controlled by the tilt of Earth’s axis, which affects how strongly sunlight hits the ground but the small changes in the distance make the seasons a little milder in the Northern Hemisphere and a little harsher in the Southern Hemisphere.
