Teen’s show is straight from his living room

Rob Owen

He’s a college student who hosts a cable access talk show in his living room. His mom’s his director. His dad is a stage hand. And now E! Entertainment Television has given him his own series following the unfortunate return of “The Anna Nicole Show.”

“The Michael Essany Show” (debuting at 10:30 p.m. Sunday) is part- reality show _ viewers see Essany booking his guests, preparing for the taping _ and part talk show as Essany interviews a celebrity guest in his parents’ Valparaiso, Ind., home.

Singer Kelly Rowland is first to sit on Essany’s couch, although Sunday’s premiere is as much about Essany getting his deal with E! as it is about his homemade program.

“The sooner I get Jay’s job, the sooner they get their living room back,” Essany says of his goal to unseat NBC’s Jay Leno. It’s an amusing concept and Essany is an appealing underdog.
