CANBERRA — The detention of hundreds of child asylum seekers by the Australian. government was set back by a Family Court ruling which declared the detentions illegal. The Family Court based its decision the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child to protect minors
Civil rights and child welfare groups have called for the immediate release of children in the detention centres. The government intends to appeal the Family Court’s ruling.
