Elections for the 2001-2002 officers for the Commercial Law League of America took place on July 17, 2001, at the 107th Annual CLLA Convention, held in Hilton Head, South Carolina, Brief biographies of the new officers follow.
WILLIAM C. STURM
President
William C. Sturm, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was selected to serve a one-year term as president.
He has been a CLLA member since 1977. He was the Advisor for the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act Committee, 1992-94; Chairman, 1988-92; and Co-Vice Chairman in 1987-88. He is a member of the Commercial Law Journal, a continuing member of the Board of Associate Editors since 1994, and Contributing Editor, 1992-94. He has been the Chairman for the Board of Directors of The Graduate Program since 1994, a member of the Board of Directors for the Fund for Public Education since 1994, and Chairman for the Nominating Committee for the Midwest District, 1992-93.
Mr. Sturm was a member of the National Committee for the Future Planning Conference, 1991-93, and was the Chairman in 1991-92. Also, he was First Vice Chairman of the Midwest District in 1990-91, Second Vice Chairman in 1989-90, and Secretary of the Midwest District, 1988-89. In 1982-85, 1986-88, and 1994-Present, he was a member of the Executive Council. Additionally, he was the CoChairman for Mid-Year Meeting held in Milwaukee in 1982-83 and in 1990-91. For the National Nominating Council, he has been a member since 1985 and served as Vice Chairman, 1988-89. He was the Co-Vice Chairman for the Commercial Practices and Procedures Committee, 1984-86; the Wisconsin Membership Chairman, 1985-86; and Vice Chairman, 1984-85.
In 1980-81 and 1983-84, he was a member of the National Membership Committee. He served on the Office Management and Economics Committee as the Co-Chairman, 1982-84, Co-Vice Chairman, 1981-82. During 1980-82, he was the State Membership Chairman for Wisconsin and Chairman of the program presented at National Convention in San Juan in 1981-82. He has been on the Board of Directors for Marquette University’s National Consumer Credit Management Institute since 1995 and is an Advanced Member of the Healthcare Financial Management Association. He is a member of the following: American Guild of Patient Account Management, Wisconsin Medical Credit Association, Wisconsin Conference Executive Committee Representing the Academic Staff and the American Association of University Professors, 1994-95. Additionally he is a member of the Wisconsin Professional Speakers Association, National Speakers Association, and the Official Representative of the Midwest Region to the House of Delegates since 1990.
William Sturm is strongly involved in the Midwest Academy of Legal Studies in Business; he was the President, 1990-91, Vice President and Program Chair, 1989-90; and Secretary, 1988-89. He has been a member of the Business and Health Administration Association Advisory Board since 1990. He served as the President, 1989-90, Vice President and Program Chair, 1988-89; Co-Vice President and Proceedings Editor, 1987-88. Actively involved in the Midwest Business Administration Association, he was President, 1996-97; President-Elect and Program Chair, 1995-96; and Vice President, 1994-95. Also for this association, he was a member of the Board of Directors, 1992-94 and member of the President’s Advisory Board, 1990-92. He represented the Midwestern District for the Academy of Legal Studies in Business and was a member of the House of Delegates’ national committee to review structure of the organization, 1990-91.
Born on August 4, 1941, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he received his degrees from Marquette University. He earned his J.D. in 1966 and his B.S. in 1963. He is licensed to practice in the State of Wisconsin, Federal Courts for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, and the United States Supreme Court.

JOHN P. WANDERER
President -Elect
John P. Wanderer, of Las Vegas, NV was elected to serve a one-year term as President-Elect.
Wanderer has been a member of the CLLA since 1975. He is a member of the Bankruptcy & Creditors’ Rights Section, the Bankruptcy & Insolvency Section, the Board of the Fund for Public Education and the Commercial Law Foundation.
He currently is the Chair of the Alternate Dispute & Resolution, (1998-2001). Wanderer served on the Pamphlet Review and Revision Committee as Chair, 1995-99, and Advisor, 1999-2000. In addition, he is the former State Chairman for Membership and a member of the Arbitration & Grievance Committee. He was twice elected to serve as Vice Chair for the Convention Site Advisory Committee, 1997-98 and 2000-2001. He served as Vice Chair, 1998– 99, and Chair, 1999-2000, to the Creditors’ Rights Section Promotion Development & Marketing Committee. He was Attorney member to the Board of Governors, 1992– 95; former member of the Western Region Executive Council, 1997-2000 and former member of the Creditors’ Rights Executive Council, 1995-98.
Over the years, Wanderer has been active in several areas of the League. He is a former member of the following committees: Strategic Planning Group, Legislative, Future Site Planning, Forwarders ST Receivers, President’s Task Force-Commercial Practice & Economics, Commercial Practice & Procedures, Computerization & Standardization, Office Management & Economics, Council of Committees and Nominating Council.
He is a member of Nevada, Arizona and Clark County Bar Association. Additionally, he is a member of Southern Nevada Association of Bankruptcy Attorneys, International Bar Association, American Bankruptcy Institute, International Association of Gaming Attorneys, American Bar Association, American Collectors Association and National Association of Collection Attorneys.
Wanderer was a recipient of the State Bar of Nevada Distinguished Service Award. He is a former member of the State Bar of Nevada Administrative-Ethics and Fee Dispute Committees. Also, he is a former Chair to the Southern Nevada Panel-State Bar Fee Dispute Committee. Wanderer served as Legislative Committee Chairman to the Clark County Bar Association and was a member of the Nevada Supreme Court Arbitration Oversight and Uniform Forms Committees.
Currently, Wanderer lectures at the Southern Nevada Institute of Credit, the Nevada Society of Certified Public Accountants, the National Judicial College and other organizations. He is author of the Nevada Section of Commercial Laws of the World, along with the majority of the pleading and practice forms currently in use at the 8th Judicial District Court, Clark County, Nevada and the judicial Courts of the Las Vegas Township.
Wanderer is Founding Member and Trustee of the Friends of the Desert Wetlands Park; Board of Governors Member of the ACLU Nevada Chapter; and Trustee of the Interfaith Student Center at UNLV.
In addition, he is a member of the following organizations: Allied Arts Council of Southern Nevada, Nevada Development Authority, Las Vegas Summer Music Festival, Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis International, Fraternal Order of the Elks, We Can Inc. (for elimination of child abuse), Congregation New Tamid, Nate Mack Lodge and B’Nai B’rith.

SHARON E. GRASS
Attorney Member to the Board of Governors
Sharon E. Grass, of Mesquite, Texas, was elected to a three-year term as Attorney Member to the Board of Governors.
She has been a member since 1981. Grass is a current member of the Arbitration, Grievance and Objection, the Creditors’ Rights Promotion, Development and Marketing Committees. She currently is the Delegate at Large for the Nominating Council, and has served as First Alternate Delegate, 1992, and Regional Delegate, 1993. She is the Convention Site Advisory Board Vice-Chair, 1998-2001. Grass was also a member of the Southern Region Membership Association and served as Chair, 1997-98, Chair-Elect, 1996-97, Vice Chair, 1995-96, Secretary, 1993-95, and Executive Council, 1992-94. She is a former member of the District Council, 1997-99 and the Future Planning Meeting, 1997-98. Grass is also a member of the Future Planning Conference, Bankruptcy and Insolvency Section, and Creditors’ Rights Section.
Grass is a member of the Dallas Bar Association, the College to Texas State Bar, the Dallas Women’s Lawyers Association, the Mesquite Chamber of Commerce, the Republican Sustainers Group, the Mesquite Republican Women’s Club, the Dallas County North Republican Club and the Greater Dallas Pachyderm Club. She has served on several committees including the Alternate Dispute Resolution Section, the Business Litigation Section, the Bankruptcy Section, the Judiciary and the Courthouse.
Sharon Grass earned her B.A. in 1975 from Southern Methodist University, her J.D. in 1980 from Southern Methodist University of Law She was accepted into the Texas Bar in 1980, the U.S. District Court, Northern District of Texas in 1981 and the Eastern District of Texas in 1998.

ROBERT S. BERNSTEIN Treasurer
Robert S. Bernstein was appointed to serve a one-year term as Treasurer of the League.
Born on June 18, 1954, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he received his BA from the University of Pittsburgh in 1976 and earned his JD in 1981 from Duquesne University School of Law. Admitted to the Pennsylvania, Florida, West Virginia and New York Bars, he is also admitted to practice before the United States District Courts for the Eastern, Middle and Western District Courts of Pennsylvania; the Third Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States Supreme Court.
At the 107th Annual CLLA Convention, held in Hilton Head, South Carolina, Bernstein was also presented with his twenty-five year membership certificate. He has held all of the national elective offices in the CLLA.
A member of the League since 1975, he served as President 1995-96, Attorney Member of the Board of Governors from 1991-94, and President-Elect 1994-95. In 1989-90, he was the League’s Recording Secretary and in 1987-88 served as the Young Members’ Section Representative to the Board of Governors.
Mr. Bernstein served as Chair of the League’s Web Presence Task Force during the first significant upgrade of the League’s Web site since its inception. He served as Chair of the Office Management and Economics Committee for many years and was a Vice Chair of the Computerization/Standardization Committee. In addition, he held all offices of the Young Members’ Section, including Chair in 1986-87.
Mr. Bernstein is a member of the American, Pennsylvania and Allegheny County Bar Associations, the Equipment Leasing Association, the Eastern Association of Equipment Lessors and the Pittsburgh Leasing Association.
He was one of the first attorneys in the country to be dually Board-certified and holds the Creditors’ Rights Certification and Business Bankruptcy Certification from the American Board of Certification. Active within the Allegheny County Bar Association, he is Vice Chair of the
Professional Ethics Committee, former Chair of the Technology Utilization Committee and of the Bankruptcy and Commercial Law Section. He has served as a member of the Third Circuit Court of Appeals Bankruptcy Judge Merit Selection Committee. In 199495, he served as President of the Duquesne University Law Alumni Association.
He is managing partner of Bernstein Law Firm, PC. in Pittsburgh. His wife, Ellie and his two children, Katie and Alex, have attended many League functions over the years.
JAMES M. LLOYD
Attorney Member to the Board of Governors
James M. Lloyd, of Louisville, Kentucky, has been elected to serve a three-year term as Attorney Member to the Board of Governors.
Mr. Lloyd has been a CLLA member since 1981. He was Recording Secretary, 1999-2000 and member of the Young Members’ Section, Executive Counsel, 1990-93, holding the positions of Secretary, 1994, Treasurer, 1995, Chair– Elect, 1996, Chair, 1997 and Board Liaison, 1998. In addition, he was the Young Members’ Section Representative for the Future Site Selection Committee, 1995. Lloyd is a former member of the Membership Committee, 1993, the Political Action Committee, 1997, the Convention Site Selection Committee, 1996– 97, and the Creditors’ Rights Section Committee, 1994-98.
From 1992-97, he was an Executive Council Member for the Creditors’ Rights Section. He participated in the Creditors’ Rights Outside Groups, 1997, Creditors’ Rights Technology, 1997-98, and the Creditors’ Rights Promotion and Development, 1998. Lloyd was a CLLANet Operations Board Member, 1997, and Member of the CLLANet Users Advisory, 1996-97. He was the Regional Delegate for the Nominating Council in 1992-93 and Delegate at Large, Chair, in 1996-97. He served as an Executive Council Member for the Southern Region from 1990-1999.

Born in 1957 in Louisville, Kentucky, Mr. Lloyd earned his B.B.A. from the University of Kentucky in 1979 and his J.D. from the University of Louisville School of Law in 1982. Later in 1982, he was admitted to the Kentucky and Indiana State Bars. He is currently an active member in the Kentucky, Indiana and Louisville Bar Associations.

THOMAS W. HAMILTON
Law List Member to the Board of Governors
Thomas W Hamilton, of Cleveland, Ohio, was selected to serve a three-year term as Law List Member of the Board of Governors.
Mr. Hamilton joined the CLLA in 1976. He was this year’s Convention Chairman for the two Midwest District CLLA mini-conventions held in Cleveland and for the CLLA National Convention held in Hilton Head Island. Having been a Past President for the Association of Law List Publishers, in 1998 he was selected as Co-Chair for the association. In addition, he was the Treasurer for the Law List Publishers Security Fund. He was Attorney to the Board of Governors from 1983-86. In addition, he was a Board Member on Fund for Public Education.
Mr. Hamilton is a Past Chairman of the following committees: Membership, Member Benefits, President’s Cup, Pamphlet Review and Revision, State Membership-Ohio, Client Security Fund, and Convention Site Advisory. In 1992 he was the Vice Chair for the Future Planning Conference. In 1998 he was Chairman for the Midwestern Region. He worked on the following committees: Law List, Lawyers & Directories, Office Management, President’s Advisory Council, Commercial Practices Task Force, District Council, International Conference, Liaison with NACM, Awards and Presentations, Member Objections and Grievances, Arbitration, Heritage, Computerization and Standardization, Laws and Legislation, Nominating Council, and the Strategic Planning Group.
Mr. Hamilton is the President and founder of Trust Me Tours Ski Club and also President of American Net Services, Inc. He is and Advisory Board Member of E-Debt Exchange (Akron, Ohio). Hamilton is also a Past Director of the Morris Weisman Foundation. He is a member and frequent convention attendee at the Debt Buyers Association, NARCA, NACM Collection Managers, NASP, Asset Buyers Program, ACA, IACC, NABT, and Faulkner & Gray Conventions. In addition, he is a member of the Greater Cleveland Growth Association and the Westwood Country Club.
Thomas Hamilton gained his B.A. at Denison University in 1970 and his M.B.A. from the Crummer School of Business in 1972. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Air Force Reserves from 1972-1982. Joseph A. Marino, of Verona, New Jersey, is the newly elected Recording Secretary.
He has been an active member of the Commercial Law League of America since 1978. He was is the 2000-01 Creditors’ Rights Section’s Board Representative to the Commercial Law League’s Board of Governors.He is a Past Chair of the Creditors’ Rights Section, having been elected as Chair in 1998-99, Chair-Elect in 1997-98, Treasurer in 1996-97 and Secretary in 1995-96. He served on the Executive Council of the Creditors’ Rights Section and was the founder and first Chair of the CRS, Retail Claims Committee. He also was Chair of the CRS Future Planning Conference 1998. He is a Past Chair of the Eastern District. Having been elected to the office of Chair-Elect and Vice Chair after serving six years on the Executive Council of the Eastern District, Mr. Marino was the chosen as the Chair of the 78th Annual Eastern Regional Convention of the CLLA in New York in 1998.
Mr. Marino was a participant in both the second and third Future Planning Conferences. He served as an Advisor, 1992-94, and Chair, 1989-92, of the Commercial Practice & Procedure. He has also been an active member of American Bar Association, New Jersey State Bar Association, and the Essex County Bar Association.
He is a contributing author of numerous legal articles, is an editor and contributing author of the CLLA Creditors’ Rights Collections handbook and has served on several educational panels over the past 20 years.
Born on April 26, 1949, Mr. Marino received his bachelor’s degree in Accounting from St. Louis University in 1971, and his J.D. from New England School of Law in 1976. He was admitted to practice in the Federal Courts in 1976 and by the States of New Jersey in 1976; Florida in 1976; and the District of Columbia in 1977.

Chair Young Members’ Section
Born December 12, 1962, Jeffrey N. Schatzman is a native of Miami, Florida.He received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of Florida in 1986 and his J.D. degree from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Lansing, Michigan in 1989. In 1996, he and Arnold Schatzman formed the Miami, Florida law firm of Schatzman & Schatzman, PA. Jeffrey Schatzman practices in the areas of bankruptcy, commercial and retail collections and commercial transactions. He is a member of The Florida Bar and is admitted to practice in all Florida State Courts as well as the Federal District Courts for the Southern and Middle Districts of Florida.
He is a member of the Bankruptcy Bar Association for the Southern District of Florida and the Commercial Law League of America, where he was recently elected Chair of the Young Members’ Section, serves on the Executive Council of the Southern District and is a member of the Creditors Rights Section and the Bankruptcy Section.
Mr. Schatzman has held numerous positions within the CLLA, including three terms on the Executive Council of the Young Members’ Section, three terms on the Executive Council of the Southern District, and has Chaired several Young Members’ Section committees including the Educational and Mentor Committees. He has also held the positions of Chair– Elect, Treasurer and Secretary of the Young Members’ Section and has spoken at several CLLA meetings on the topics of bankruptcy and creditors’ rights.

WANDA BORGES
Bankruptcy Section Representative
Wanda Borges has been appointed to serve as a representative of the Bankruptcy Section. She has been specializing in commercial insolvency practice and commercial litigation for over twenty years.
She is the Bankruptcy Section Representative to the Board of Governors and a member of the Executive Council of the Eastern District Region. She is admitted to practice before the courts of the State of New York and the United States District Courts for New York and Connecticut as well as the Supreme Court of the United States. She is a member of the American Bar Association and INSOL.
She is a regular lecturer for the National Association of Credit Managers and its various affiliates. Ms. Borges is a faculty member for the NACM’s Graduate School of Credit and Financial Management at Dartmouth College. She has been a faculty member for the National Institute on Credit Management.
She is also a regular lecturer for the American Management Association, the Broadcast Cable Financial Management Association and the Broadcast Cable Credit Association. Additionally, she has presented seminars for the National Conference of Bankruptcy Judges, the American Bankruptcy Institute, various local and national Bar Associations, the National Chemical Credit Association, the Publishers Credit Association, the Health Industry Manufacturers Association, the Beauty and Barber Manufacturers Credit Association, the New Hampshire Association of Broadcasters, the Credit Association for Satellite History, and the New York State Food Service Distributors Association. She is a frequent lecturer for Riemer Reporting Service. She has conducted “in-house” seminars on credit, collection, secured transactions and insolvency for several corporate clients.
She has published several articles for the NACM “Fraud Prevention News”, the Broadcast Cable Credit Association “Creditopic$” and the Broadcast Cable Financial Management Journal. She is a co-author of the National Association of Broadcasters’ book Out of the Red and Into the Black, as well as the Broadcast Cable Credit Association’s Credit Handbook. She is a contributing editor for the Commercial Law Bulletin and has contributed to the Bankruptcy Section Newsletter. Ms. Borges is the lead author and Editor-inChief of Enforcing Judgments and Collecting Debts in New York, published by West Publishing Company.
She is a member and past Chair of the Board of Trustees of Mercy College. She is a past member of the Regents College Board of Trustees and the Association of Governing Boards. She is a past Chair of the Broadcast Cable Financial Management Association.

SIDNEY FRIEDMAN
Creditors’ Rights Section Representative
Sidney S. Friedman has been appointed for the Creditors’ Rights Section. He has been a member of the Commercial Law League of America for over 25 years.
He is the Creditor’s Rights Representative to the Board of Governors and the Chair of the Creditor’s Rights Section. He is a Certified Creditor’s Rights Specialist by the CLLA Academy of Commercial and Bankruptcy Law Specialists, in conjunction with the American Bar Association. In addition, he presently is the Secretary of the Eastern District Region.
Mr. Friedman is a former Chair of the Education Council of the Creditor’s Rights Section and the Eastern District Region, responsible for selecting and organizing educational seminars. He is also a lecturer at the CLLA educational seminars.
Sidney S. Friedman gained his B.A. at the University of Maryland, Cum Laude, in 1969 and his J.D. from the University of Maryland Law School in 1974. He is a member of the American Bar Association, Maryland Bar Association, Baltimore City Bar, Baltimore County Bar and the Association of Trial Lawyers. He served on the Maryland Arbitration Claims Panels and on the Attorney Grievance Inquiry Panel.
