Coal Age Sponsors Transportation Seminar

Coal transporters serve as the vital link between mine operators and utilities. Transportation systems differ by region and mine operators use barges, trains, and trucks, sometimes in combination, to move coal. In fact, when one considers the amount of coal U.S. Class I rail carriers haul, the entire network could be viewed as one large moving stockpile.

The importance of dialogue in this arena cannot be underestimated. During the rail mergers of the 1990s, coal transportation at times became congested. That problem was alleviated when discussions were initiated between the rail carriers and the mine operators and they reached a workable solution. Today, the companies that work the inland waterways and coal truckers both have issues that need to be resolved.

For more than 85 years, the Keystone Coal Industry Manual has tracked the industry, particularly coal marketers, operators, transporters, and end-users. Bringing it together with the resources of Coal Age and a few transportation specialists, PRIMEDIA Business has put together the premier event for coal transporters, the Keystone Coal Transportation & Logistics (KCT) seminar. The event takes place Jan. 29-31 at the Marriott Sawgrass located in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. (near Jacksonville).

Wanting to put the best technical program together, Coal Age asked Joe Lema, a veteran coal transportation executive, to serve as program chairman. Taking a hands-on approach, Lema said that he wanted to focus on widening the knowledge about the creative possibilities available to delegates on coal distribution from loadout facilities at the mines to combustion units at coal-fired power plants.

“The program will not be a worn out colloquy on the merits of coal use, or the extent to which coal is used in today’s energy markets,” Lema said. “Those attending already know well the present profile for coal in the energy fuel marketplace.”

“The term, creative possibilities, in the distribution of coal,” Lema said, “is central to a constant search for increasing coal’s competitiveness in the mix of fuels for generating electricity, recognizing that generally distribution will account for one-quarter to one-half, and as much as three-quarters or more, of the total delivered price of coal.”

The KCT seminar opens with a full day of technical sessions on Thursday, Jan. 30. On Friday, the program concludes with a roundtable discussion of rail issues. Full-conference registration ($450) includes an opening reception and all meals throughout the event.

What would a seminar be without social events? The Sawgrass name should ring a bell with golfers. Each year, the pros play the Sawgrass TPC Stadium Course designed by Pete Dye, where a signature island green on No. 17 sometimes costs them the tournament. Tee times have been reserved for a limited number of KCT golfers for the afternoon of Wednesday, Jan. 29. For those not interested in golf, the organizers have put together a schooner sailing excursion for that same afternoon.

Spouses are welcome. In addition to the many amenities offered by the Sawgrass Marriott ($139 per night), a special St. Augustine tour and shopping excursion has been organized to take place during the full-day session. Coal transporters should register early for the three most productive days in January for coal transportation.
