DAVID CZECHOWSKI was promoted to Manager, Economic Research at Portland Cement Association, to recognize his expanding role in the Economic Research Department. He has taken on increased responsibility for numerous department projects while the search for a new chief economist continues at PCA.

Holcim Ltd.’s CEO MARKUS AKERMANN and PETER KUPFER were newly elected to the company’s Board of Directors. Also WILLY KISSLING was newly appointed Vice Chairman of the Board. THOMAS SCHMIDHEINY, Chairman of the Board, recently informed the Board and the Executive Committee of legal investigations in connection with the private purchase by him of shares in a formerly listed Spanish company. In order to avoid any repercussions from this matter on the activities of Holcim, the business of the company’s Board will be conducted by Kissling until the matter has been clarified.

R.T. BEALL, president of North Texas Cement Co., announced today that JAMES GATENS would replace him as president of the company following his June 30 retirement. Gatens has been with North Texas since 1995 and currently serves as executive vice president.

Glens Falls Lehigh Cement Co. reports that DEREK NICHOLLS was named vice president of operations and RICHARD MOSS was promoted to vice president of engineering.

Lafarge North America announced the retirement of EDWARD BALFE, executive vice president and president of construction materials, after 36 years. TOM FARRELL, who joined Lafarge in 1990, will become executive vice president and president of Western construction materials in Denver. DOMINIQUE CALABRESE, who has 22 years of experience with the company, will become executive vice president and president of Eastern construction materials in Herndon, Va. In Lafarge’s gypsum business, ALAIN BOURUET-AUBERTOT has decided to leave the company, and IKE PRESTON has been appointed to succeed him as President, Lafarge-Gypsum. All of these appointments become effective June 1.
