South Carolina

The 2008 presidential sweepstakes are in full swing in South Carolina. Republican candidates U.S. Sen. John McCain, Gov. Mitt Romney, Gov. Mike Huckabee, Gov. George Pataki and Mayor Rudy Giuliani are the early favorites among GOP primary voters. Democrats were practically engaged to Gov. Mark Warner before his decision not to run for office. Former VP nominee John Edwards, Gov. Bill Richardson and Sen. Evan Bayh will benefit from Warner’s departure. U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton has stayed away from the Palmetto State while her rivals have begun to sign-up key activists. A run by U.S. Sen. Barack Obama could energize the Democratic base.
