Dole for Senator? – Elizabeth H. Dole – Brief Article

Top national Republican Party officials have been trying to persuade former Reagan/Bush cabinet member Elizabeth Dole to consider running for the U.S. Senate in North Carolina next year should GOP incumbent Sen. Jesse Helms announce his retirement.

Rumor has it that Dole is interested but noncommittal.” Polls nationally and in North Carolina have indicated that she remains highly popular, with low negative ratings.

Helms said he would announce his ’04 plans by the end of August.

Dole was briefly a candidate for the 2000 Republican presidential nomination. She withdrew citing an inability to raise adequate funds.

Democrats preparing to run, or considering the race, are U.S. Rep. Bobby Etheridge; state Sen. Eric Reeves; Secretary of State Elaine Marshall; and state Rep. Dan Blue.

Without Helms in the race, US. Rep. Richard Burr has been touted as the early favorite for the GOP nomination, assuming Dole does not run.
