ADVOCACY – Brief Article
NATIONAL ORGANIZATiON FOR WOMEN
www.now.org
NOW IS IN THE first stages of a re-launch, but given the size and clout of this organization, this site will bear watching. With George W. Bush in the White House, NOW has a large target to guide its advocacy.
The slick site is already top notch when it comes to maximizing presence. There is a lot of news — generated by NOW and from national media sources — including an “Outrage of the Week” and editorial cartoons. Visitors can sign up to get announcements when items are added or action is needed. Other participation options include a discussion forum, a poll and an “Act Now” section that allows visitors to send their representatives an e-mail based on zip code, send friends “e-greetings” or “Send George W. Bush a Fathers’ Day Card.”
NOW does well to post ways that supporters can get involved — volunteering at a local chapter (links to local groups included), attending conferences donating at many levels or becoming a member, in addition to taking online action.
The site offers NOWWorld, an Internet service provider that contributes to NOW causes. There’s also extensive background information on the organization and its priorities, merchandise and special sections for global and young feminism, with special discussions and history in each.
