Garrett, Jeffrey

Marx, Sonia. Klassiker der Jugendliteratur in Ubersetzungen: Struwwelpeter, Max und Moritz, Pinocchio im deutsch-italienischen Dialog (Classics of children’s literature in translations: S., M. and M., and P in GermanItalian dialog). Padua: Unipress, 1997. 220 p. ISBN 8880980254. Lit. 30,000.

These seven essays consider the transformations that inevitably take place to effect the translation of one culture’s children’s book classic into the semiotic universe of another, both in word and image. The final essay examines the much-discussed Der neue Pinocchio (Weinheim: Beltz & Gelberg, 1988) of Andersen prize winner Christine Nostlinger (with illustrations by Niklaus Heidelbach, 1988), contrasting it with the completely different interpretation of the same year by Sabine Friedrichson. The author is professor of German linguistics at the University of Padua.
