UN Environmental Programme – report on global environmental concerns – Brief Article

The destruction of tropical rainforests has caused irreversible damage to the earth’s biodiversity, according to a report from the UN Environmental Programme. In its Global Environment Outlook 2000, the UNEP says the earth could suffer several “full-scale emergencies” such as widespread water shortages and degraded topsoil. The developed world must cut consumption of natural resources by 90 percent to permit others to emerge from poverty, the report said.
