Atheists in Foxholes – Around the States: Alabama – atheists hold a rally at the Alabama State Judicial Building – Brief Article

Kudos again to American Atheists State Director Larry Darby and the irrepressible Atheists throughout Alabama. Since our last newsletter, Larry has organized another demonstration against the faith-based initiative, greeting Vice President Dick Cheney during a visit to Montgomery, and hosted a secular memorial commemorating the 9/11 tragedy.

The “Atheists in Foxholes” event was originally scheduled to be held on the state capitol building, but authorities denied access immediately prior to the event. Larry had to quickly find a new venue. Five blocks away was the State Judicial Building, the locus of an ongoing battle over the separation of church and state. Here, in the rotunda, State Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore has installed a 5,280-pound granite monument of the Ten Commandments. Lawsuits are challenging the move as a violation of the First Amendment–and Larry thought, “What better place for Atheists to rally.

Speaking at the “Atheists in Foxholes” event were Dr. George Whatley, naval veteran; Blair Scott of the Mobile Atheists; Air Force veteran Paul Sweeney; Harold Leader, Air Force; Carol Moore, a veteran of the Women’s Air Corps; and Kathleen Moore, founder and president of the Military Atheists and Freethinkers.
