Maintaining the mailroom – Snapshots From the War – Brief Article

OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM — Tech. Sgt. Salina Kennell, 1st Expeditionary Rapid Engineering Deployable Heavy Operation Repair Squadron Engineers Group, sorts boxes at the 379th Expeditionary Communications Squadron post office delivered by two 5-ton trucks filled with mail.

Last fall, the Department of Defense suspended the Operation Dear Abby and Any Servicemember mail programs because of force protection concerns. Although these programs provided support to friends and loved ones overseas, they also provided an avenue to introduce hazardous substances or materials into the mail system from unknown sources. Since DOD officials can’t support creative and well-intentioned efforts that defeat force protection measures, they recommended alternatives to mail and donation programs, like e-mail and virtual cards.
