* At press time, New York City Council was considering an anti-car alarm bill that would prohibit the sale and installation of audible motor vehicle alarms. The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) opposes the bill and is urging Council to focus on enforcement of the current law governing the use of audible car alarms. The current law states that such systems must be configured to automatically terminate within three minutes and only may be triggered to go off by (1) direct physical contact, or (2) individual remote control. CEA fears the new rule would force local consumers and retailers to leave New York to buy and sell aftermarket security systems.
