Status seekers

George Bullis

In your August 17 issue, Todd Henneman interviewed Tom Trevor about his experience of learning that a sexual trick from a Hawaiian vacation was HIV-positive [“Scared of Sex”]. Trevor said that after that experience he avoids sex because “men can’t be totally trusted.” It seems Trevor believes HIV-positive individuals must disclose their status to be trustworthy; however, I saw no indication that his partner was not trustworthy–he was simply not asked his HIV status. If Trevor had assumed his partner was negative without distinctly asking, the fault is squarely on him. In my opinion, it is still the responsibility of both partners to inquire about HIV status if so desired, without leaving that burden squarely on HIV-positive folks.
