Reader comments from www.advocate.com – The Advocate Poll – AIDS fundraisers – Brief Article

In the February 19 issue, readers were asked:

Before you make a donation or buy a ticket to an AIDS fund-raiser, do you consider how much of your money will go to pay for the cost of the event?

5% Undecided

45% No

55% Yes

Note: Table made from pie chart.

* “There are many excellent AIDS causes out there, but there are also some real stinkers who keep half or more of the money they take in. I trust their karma will eventually catch up to them. In the meantime, I’m reading the fine print before donating.”

* “Any donation is exposure for the cause and therefore beneficial, Even if only half of my donation goes to the cause, that is still helping the charity.”

* “I’m more inclined to donate directly to organizations that focus on their primary goal rather than putting on elaborate events in the name of a cause, If I attend an event, it’s because I’m interested in the event itself.”

* “It costs money to put on a fund-raising event, I have been a rider in the Pallotta TeamWorks AIDS Rides in the Midwest for the past six years and will continue to ride as long as there is a ride.”

* “If we can’t trust AIDS fund-raisers, whom can we trust?”
