Never in the closet

Jerilyn Goodman

By your prominent “Come Out, Already” headline and photos in the September 28 issue, some readers might infer that Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin is one of those politicians who “came out of the closet.” In fact, Tammy was never in one. Since her first run for elective office in the laid ’80s, Tammy’s sexual orientation was never a secret; nor was bet commitment to health care for all, women’s rights, civil rights, education, and fiscal responsibility. She has won 12 elections, in large part because, as a constituent once told her, “if you call be honest ‘about that [being a lesbian], I guess you’ll be honest about everything.” We must work for the day when there is simply no closet for politicians or anyone else to come out of.
