Med schools fail lesbian health – lack of gynecologist training on lesbian health issues – Brief Article
Bob Adams
Education about lesbian health issues is woefully inadequate or missing entirely from most obstetric and gynecologic residency programs, according to a survey conducted by researchers at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. Coupled with the fact that lesbians are less likely than other women to seek regular ob-gyn care, this results in a one-two punch that can put lesbian lives at risk, warns lead researcher Paula Amato.
Amato hopes that pointing out these curricular gaps will lead ob-gyn programs to take it upon themselves to expand instruction on issues that are unique to lesbian patients.
