Marchers attacked in Jerusalem

Ultra-Orthodox Jews have stood and yelled angry insults from the sidelines of previous Jerusalem gay pride parades, but their opposition had never turned bloody–until June 30, when a man wearing the traditional black ultra-Orthodox outfit jumped into a group of marchers and attacked three people with a knife, stabbing one man in the torso. The attacker was arrested and charged with three counts of attempted murder.

“It took many years for Jerusalem to have the gay pride parade,” said Moshik Toledano, 39, a participant in the parade, which included about 5,000 marchers. “But once it happens it makes no difference if the ultra-Orthodox come here and try to stop it.”
