Lesbian vs. Dreier
Christopher Lisotta
As U.S. representative David Dreier continued to avoid questions about his sexual orientation, his opponent in this year’s election said she’s got nothing to hide. In fact, she’s a lesbian. Cynthia Matthews (pictured), a 41-year-old environmental safety expert from Southern California, challenged the longtime Republican incumbent on issues such as jobs and immigration. But talk about sexuality dominated the campaign.
During an interview with The Advocate, Matthews said she’s been asked repeatedly if Dreier is gay. “I don’t care,” she said. “But if it is true, it’s very sad. If you take a look at his voting record, he’s voted against gays and lesbians on every front. And he’s voted against covering people with AIDS.”
In a pro-gay first, Dreier voted against the Marriage Protection Amendment (formerly the Federal Marriage Amendment) in September. But given his overall record, that’s little consolation, Matthews said.
