Hedwig and the full monty – the Buzz – John Cameron Mitchell to film porn movie

“FUCK PORN,” says John Cameron Mitchell, creator of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. “It’s as prepackaged as any Hollywood film. The actors aren’t doing what they would normally do sexually, and it teaches you that everyone has sex in exactly the same order. It’s as bad as any Mel Gibson movie.”

Already used to doing what people said couldn’t be done, like putting on an acclaimed transgender rock-and-roll musical, Mitchell is now tackling sex–real sex, with all that implies. Is American film ready?

“Why not?” asks Mitchell. Using the German film Taxi zum Klo as an example, he explains, “I want to use sex as a narrative device. It can have as much pain, joy, humor, and excitement as any other situation. Why not take advantage of that in a story with characters you care about–one where you don’t cut away from the hard-ons?”

Knowing that most actors will shy away from the project, Mitchell has opened auditions to nonprofessionals via a Web site, and he is reaching beyond the studios for financing. “We want adventurous regular people. And we want investors who are daring. After all, someone was once offered the first Coca-Cola stock.” And as for finding a distributor, Mitchell isn’t worried: “Please! It’s going to have hard-core sex in it.”
