Gay rights, oui; equality, non – France – opinions about gay rights in France by presidential candidates – Brief Article
Though both of France’s leading presidential candidates addressed gay voters in an interview with the French gay magazine Tetu published March 21, neither emerged as particularly strong on gay rights. In fact, both came out against the rights of gays adopting children or legally marrying.
“I think that every child needs a mother and a father–female references and male references–to construct his identity,” incumbent president Jacques Chirac, a conservative, told Tetu. Socialist prime minister Lionel Jospin seconded Chirac, saying, “The right to have the sex life of one’s choice should not be confused with the hypothetical right to have a child.” Jospin added, however, that officials should not take sexual orientation into account when single people apply to adopt children.
