Cartoon gaiety

Carlos Alazraqui, the voice of Taco Bell’s hot chihuahua, also spouts off in Fox TV’s new animated hit Family Guy–as the Family gay. He plays fastidious Latin American Mr. Weed, boss man to the title character, toy-factory cog Peter Griffin. The “crush-prone” Weed has so far “only hinted” at his orientation, Alazraqui says, but the hints drop hard: In the pilot Weed somehow wound up with the detached penis from Michelangelo’s David and lovingly named it Eduardo. Such irreverence–and stereotyping–“will probably offend some people,” says Gary Janetti, a consulting Guy producer who’s out, but he promises Weed will “explore his sexuality more fully.” Indeed, in the May 2 episode he dallies with a “buffed” employee. And seeing that The Simpsons and Family GUy are back-to-back Sunday nights, might Weed develop a tie-in crush on that other honcho, Mr. Burns? “That could be fun to play off,” Janetti says. Tell that to Smithers.
