An uncommon hardship – Fund-Raising – advocacy group for lesbians Uncommon Legacy Foundation closes national office due to financial difficulties – Brief Article
For more than 10 years Uncommon Legacy Foundation has addressed lesbian concerns through philanthropy. Now the organization must face a new concern–financial hardship. Citing a fundraising climate soured by bad economic times, the foundation announced in early October that it would close its national office and shift its focus to local chapters.
“This decision will allow us to put most of the money we raise right back into our communities,” said Uncommon Legacy’s Kimberly Hill Hoover.
The foundation, which has raised close to $1 million since its inception, is part of a growing list of advocacy groups hit hard by fund-raising difficulties. The national office was open for only three years. Prior to that, the organization operated out of the basement of Hoover’s home.
The group awards academic. scholarships to lesbian students and grants to projects or organizations that deal with lesbian issues.
