Italians lift up and awary

Accessibility specialist Bestgroup Industrie has developed MoDiLift, a battery-powered on-board lift which can be fitted to vehicles during refurbishment. Railway Gazette International reports that two prototypes are currently undergoing tests on Spanish National Railways regional trains, and MoDiLift will be used on 10 trainsets being refurbished by Magliola & Figli for services between Italy and France.

MoDiLift does not take up space on the train floor or obstruct the doorways. The control box is located under the floor, and structural modification of the vehicle is unnecessary. The lifting platform is 894mm wide and 1,240mm long. The lift weighs 237kg, with a lifting capacity of 350kg. The lifting height depends on the application. Push-button operation allows passengers to use the lift unaided. Safety devices prevent operation of the lift while the train is running, or the train departing when the lift is deployed. Railways is installing Bestgroup Industrie ramps to improve access from platforms. Refurbishment of 20 trainsets started in July for completion in December. A version of MoDiLift to carry stretchers has also been developed.
