Miner recovering after losing left arm

Republic School Board member Dave Michel is recovering at home from a mining accident in which he lost his left arm below the elbow.

“I’m left-handed, so I’ve got a lot of learning new things to do,” Michel said.

Michel, 38, had been working for Kinross Gold about three months when the accident occurred last Thursday at the company’s K2 mine near Curlew, Wash.

General manager Bob Taylor said Tuesday that he had returned from vacation to deal with the accident, and didn’t want to comment until he had gotten a report. Michel said he was driving an underground ore- hauling truck that slammed into a tunnel wall when he looked around to see whether another vehicle was behind him.

Michel, who has been on the school board about four months, was the subject of a March 2003 Spokesman-Review article about workers displaced by the closure of the Vaagen Bros. sawmill in Republic.
