ANA Participates in Dialogue on SARS Diagnostics
On July 14, the Food and Drug Administration sponsored a “SARS Diagnostics: Scientific and Regulatory Challenges” in Rockville, MD. The purpose of the meeting was to bring together stakeholders to consider resources and methods to evaluate diagnostic tests for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).
Representatives from government public health agencies, academia, medical device product manufacturers, clinical professions (including ANA), and the international community attended. Topic areas discussed included describing various diagnostic measures used during SARS outbreaks; streamlining/expediting PDA-approval for SARS diagnostic tests; encouraging public-private partnerships to develop effective, reliable SARS diagnostic tests; and prompt distribution and use of SARS diagnostic tests among clinicians and laboratories. The meeting was the first to initiate public dialogue among pertinent stakeholders to better handle the potential and anticipated resurgence of SARS as well as other emerging infectious diseases.
