Stop a side stitch – Fitness Tip

Lisa Jhung

Wonder what causes those sharp pains in your sides while you’re exercising? Seattle-based physical therapist and conditioning expert Neil Chasan says that the diaphragm can get overused just like any other muscle, going into spasm when it runs out of nutrients. Other causes include eating too much right before you exercise or having adverse reactions to certain foods. Chasan suggests seeking medical advice if frequent side aches persist when you’re well conditioned and hydrated and have ruled out diet as the cause. Although there’s no quick fix to make one go away, try exhaling slowly but forcefully, or breathe deeply and slow down until the pain subsides.
