Gym-goers happier with weight loss

Now there’s one more reason to seek shelter in the gym when the weather’s too cold or damp to exercise outdoors. Health club attendees reported more satisfaction with their weight-loss results than those who attempted to shed pounds outside the gym, according to an International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA)-sponsored survey. Gym-goers who set out to drop weight–and went to a health club at least 100 times per year–reported the best success, with 30 percent describing the strategy as “very/extremely successful.” Only 19 percent of those who bypassed the gym considered their weight-loss strategy “very/extremely successful.” John McCarthy, executive director of Boston-based IHRSA, attributes gym members’ success to the sense of community and knowledgeable staff offered by health clubs.–Amanda Vogel, M.A.
