Rest in peace
Last week, my 7-year-old son stumped me with a question. As we drove past an old cemetery, he noticed several graves with cement coverings that looked like tabletops. I couldn’t tell him what they were for. Do you know?-J.G., VA.
Believe it or not, these coverings were once used to prevent grave robbers from removing cadavers or stealing valuables buried with the deceased. A cement slab on four short cement columns was placed over the top of a grave to prevent anyone from getting a shovel under the slab-and to ensure that the deceased would continue to “rest in peace.”
