The American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living have joined with the Alzheimer’s Association to copublish a book tided Caring for People with Alzheimer’s Disease: A Manual for Facility Staff It follows the 1985 joint effort Care of Alzheimer’s Patients: A Manual for Nursing Home Staff and contains new information.

This new edition offers up-to-date information about the disease outlining the disease process and offering caregivers and family members no nonsense, practical suggestions for creating positive care giving moments with residents and their loved ones.

The book provides tools to assess the meaning behind behavioral responses of residents with dementia; practical, person-centered, communication, activity, and environmental strategies to help increase the comfort and decrease the stress and fear that contribute to behavioral symptoms of Alzheimer’s; behavioral vignettes to illustrate common dementia challenges, and a broad, appropriate array of proactive strategies to address these challenges; and proactive strategies in simple language, tables, and tip lists that can be adapted for individual or in-service use.
