Mary Lynn Mathre, RN, MSN, CARN, is president and co-founder of “Patients Out of Time,” a national, non-profit organization dedicated to educating healthcare professionals and the public about the therapeutic use of cannabis. “Patients Out of Time,” in conjunction with the University of Virginia, will present “The Third National Clinical Conference on Cannabis Therapeutics” in Charlottesville, Virginia on May 21 and 22, 2004. See for details.

Mary Lynne Mathre, RN is an early nurse leader on this issue. She wrote a resolution in support of medical marijuana that was adopted by the Virginia Nurses Association in 1994. Since then, ten other state nurses associations have passed similar resolutions. The New Jersey State Nurses Association passed a resolution in 2002 that:

“Recognizes the therapeutic value and safety of medically recommended marijuana; and supports legal access to (it) for patients in New Jersey who are under the care of a licensed health care provider. ” The following year, in 2003, the American Nurses Association passed a resolution to: “Support the right of patients to have safe access to therapeutic marijuana/cannabis under appropriate prescriber supervision; and, support and encourage the education of registered nurses regarding current, evidence-based therapeutic use of marijuana/cannabis. “

Ms. Mathre is the editor of Cannabis in Medical Practice: A Legal, Historical and Pharmacological Overview of the Therapeutic Use of Marijuana. She has also conducted independent research on the long-term effects of patients who have been receiving U.S. government grown marijuana for up to 27 years. Ms. Mathre has presented her research findings at the American Nurses Association Conference in Philadelphia in 2002. Ms. Mathre is an engaging public speaker, an innovative researcher and a talented editor. But more than that, she is a great nurse who is dedicated to the well being of patients everywhere.

Nurses, other healthcare professionals, and members of the public are strongly urged to attend this year’s “Patients Out of Time” conference to learn about the current evidence-based therapeutic use of marijuana/ cannabis. The other co-hosts of the conference will be the University of Virginia’s Schools of Nursing, Medicine and Law. This year’s conference is titled “Cannabis Use throughout the Lifespan.” Educators are expected from Israel, England, Canada and the United States.
