FREE CONTINUING EDUCATION FOR NURSES: Quality Health Care for the 21st Century

Health Care Excel (HCE), the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for Kentucky and Indiana, working in a collaborative effort with Jeffrey Rice, MD, MS, former Kentucky Medical Director and Chairman of the Board, is pleased to announce the establishment of its new Internet-based, independent-study Continuing Education (CE) program, Quality Health Care for the 21st Century.

Course Description:

This course, based largely upon the 2001 Institute of Medicine (IOM) report, Crossing the Quality Chasm: A New Health Sy stem for the 21st Century, has broad application within the health care community. The course includes reading the IOM report, self-test, and evaluation. In addition, course projects introduce participants to key quality organizations and Internet sites, and provide resources for your own practice site.

Projects introduce participants to RAND corporation’s literature review of quality research, issues related to patient safety, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), The VA’s “Clinical Practice Guidelines Primer,” Medicare’s Physician Office Quality Initiative, and other quality resources.

Objectives:

After completion of the CE program, participants will be able to do the following:

* State the limitations inherent in our current health care system.

* Identify the IOM’s key elements in its new paradigm of health care for the 21st century.

* Identify and describe key quality resources and Internet sites.

* Recognize and acknowledge areas for improvement in your own practice, organization, or locality.

Continuing Education Credits:

HCE has been approved as a provider of continuing education in nursing by the Indiana State Nurses’ Association (ISNA), which is an approver accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. This program offers a maximum of 29.5 contact hours. For each Chapter or Project that is completed, participants receive from 1.4 to 2.0 contact hours. Tuition is FREE!
