VAMC–Atlanta nurses celebrate
The Georgia Nurses Association Veteran Affairs Medical Center Chapter celebrated Nurse Week with a program to honor their peers and entertainment by Dr. Neil Schulman, Humorist. Dr. Shulman is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. He is also author of the best selling novel, Dr. Hollywood, and the screenplay for the movie, Dr. Hollywood, starring Michael J. Fox.
Dr. Schulman kept the audience laughing with his comedic routine focusing on medicine and nursing. He was a delight for all attending the program. Dr. Schulman brought fun and games to the program when he encouraged members of the audience to participate in the “ugly muck” contest. Can you image your Associate Medical Center Director of Patient Care Services and Nurse Executives along with staff making faces for the audience. Well, it happened. The winner of the “Ugly Muck” contest was Ms. Eula Rouland, RN, Dialysis Nurse.
The highlight of the afternoon was the presentation of the GNA/VAMC-Atlantic Peer Awards.
The Annual Peer Award has become a tradition for the Registered Nurses of the VAMC – Atlanta. The Peer Award was created in 1988. It is a mechanism for staff to let their coworkers know they are appreciated for all they do on a daily basis. It is a way of saying “Nurses Keep the Care In Healthcare” on a daily basis for their patients, their work setting, and for each other.
The 2000 Peer Award recipient was Ms. DarQuita McColumn, RN, BSN. She is a staff nurse in the Nephrology Unit. Her peers recognize Ms. McColumn as an exceptional clinician who always strive to deliver the best patient care possible. She is the time planner for her unit and is responsible for the primary care patient assignments as well as serving as primary care nurse for a panel of patients.
Other nominees for the Peer Awards were Deborah Combs, RN, (1st runner-up), Gretchen Wyatt; RN, (2nd runner-up), Mary Alexander, RN, Alicia Co-Lopez, RN, Alvernell (Vee) Cotton, RN, CNS, Rosula Cruz-Laporte, RN, Louisa Figueroa, Ella Flournoy, RN, Cathy Riley, RN, Barbara Tardy, RN, and Emily Thomas, RN.
