Performance charts in HBA, OTCs and General Merchandise
To paraphrase Walgreen Co. president Dan Jorndt and other industry leaders, you’ve still got to “dance with the party that brung ya.” In the case of the annual Triple A product performance rankings from Towne-Oller and Associates and Drug Store News, that means knowing which products in the chain drug mix make the best dance partners, and maximizing their potential to generate profits and pull customers in today’s do-or-die retail battleground.
More than ever, Jorndt’s credo holds true for the chain drug industry, which is besieged by voracious competitors on all sides even as its operators–like their counterparts in other retail channels–scramble to build consumer traffic and shopping excitement in an economy that remains stuck in neutral.
If anything, the tough conditions underlying the chain drug business make this year’s annual Triple A product performance rankings even more of a must-read reference than in years past. Indeed, the Triple A charts on the following pages — made possible chiefly through the research efforts of Towne-Oller–have become a key benchmark for many merchants at both the headquarters and store level, according to reader feedback.
What the charts show is that the perennial product performers of drug store retailing — supplemented by a handful of explosive new entries in OTC, HBA and general merchandise categories — remain the bedrock of chain drug retailing. Leading OTC names like Tylenol, Fleet enema, Advil, Lifescan, Monistat, Gyne-Lotrimin and Halls remain top performers, as do powerhouse HBA brands like Chap Stick, Scholl and Q-Tips. Tavist-D, an Rx-to-OTC switch, jumped quickly onto the Triple A list, and Polaroid’s new party film reached the dollar-ranking chart for the first time in the general merchandise listings.
The charts confirm what retailers already know to their fingertips: that they have powerful allies in their supplier partners. What’s more, the clear strengths chain drug stores have in the race for sales remain powerful consumer draws–strengths like convenience, flexibility, service and image.
