Mylan Pharmaceuticals – scoring on drug tablets allows dosage flexibility – Brief Article
Mylan Pharmaceuticals has introduced the Mylan brand of buspirone hydrochloride 15 mg tablets, the only AB-rated, therapeutically equivalent alternative to Bristol-Myers Squibb’s BuSpar.
The new drug offers a range of dosing flexibility through different scoring on each side of the tablet. The side marked “MB3” is scored once in the middle, making each half of the tablet equal to 7.5 mg when broken. The “555” side is scored twice, so that each third is equal to 5 mg when broken.
Mylan brand’s scoring allows pharmacists to fill prescriptions for 5 mg, 7.5 mg, 10 mg or 15 mg tablets, reducing stock of the product. Patients also have the advantage of using the drug for any dosage prescribed, permitting physicians to change the dose size more easily.
