Derma-Smoothe/FS® for childhood atopic dermatitis

Derma-Smoothe/FS® for childhood atopic dermatitis

A recent study from The Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology tested fluocinolone acetonide topical oil 0.01% in a blend of refined peanut oil for treating atopic dermatitis. This combination, found in Derma-Smooth/FS[R] (eczema oil), is an effective and safe treatment of atopic dermatitis in both adults and children, even those with peanut sensitivity.

The greatest concern about the use of fluocinolone acetonide in peanut oil, according to the study, is the high percentage of patients with atopic dermatitis who also have peanut allergies. In hypersensitive individuals, ingestion of peanuts may cause a broad range of adverse reactions such as mild discomfort to severe sickness. There is sufficient clinical data documenting that it is the protein in peanuts that produces the allergic reaction in peanut-sensitive individuals. However, Derma-Smooth/FS contains heat-refined peanut oil, which contains no detectable levels of protein, making Derma-Smoothe/FS safe for patients with a known peanut allergy.

Three separate studies were performed in children ages 2 to 12 years with atopic dermatitis. DermaSmoothe/FS (fluocinolone acetonide 0.01% in peanut oil) was applied twice daily on dampened skin to allow for easy application to widespread areas of the body. The study found there was 50% improvement within 2 weeks of active medication therapy in 81% to 87% of the children. There was no adrenal suppression in these children after 4 weeks of treatment, and no allergic reactions were seen, even in children with peanut sensitivities. The active medication and its peanut oil base had excellent skin hydration properties.
